-Written by Senior Student Aman BrarMr. Sukh Sandhu is the Director (Kancho) and Senior Instructor (Sensei) of the GiYu Dojo in Dayton, Ohio. He has over 25 years of martial arts experience along with team athletics such as Football, Free-style Wrestling, Junior Golden Gloves Boxing, and Indian Kabbadi.
Mr. Sandhu trained in the Jinenkan for 12 years and was the senior
student of Manaka Sensei, achieving the rank of Godan or 5th Degree
Black Belt in 2005. He was the only active student in the Jinenkan who
had achieved this rank as of Fall 2007.
Mr. Sandhu also studied in the Bujinkan organization for 8 years prior
to his training in the Jinenkan.
The Bujinkan is headed by Soke Maasaki Hatsumi. Hatsumi
Sensei is
considered by many as the last historically traceable Ninjutsu
Grandmaster living today. In the Bujinkan, Mr. Sandhu was
awarded
the rank of Nidan, or 2nd Degree Black Belt in 1995.
Throughout
his koryu martial art training he was supervised as a direct senior
student of Shawn Havens and Manaka Sensei (currently of the Jinenkan)
when they were both under the Bujinkan organization.
Back in the early 90’s, Mr. Sandhu studied with numerous
established practitioners of Jujutsu and the ground fighting
related arts, to help his overall understanding of
“real”
fighting martial arts.
Mr. Sandhu, in the spirit of always learning and exploring, achieved his ShoDan 1st Degree Black Belt in Judo in 2009 under The Buckeye Judo Club. He trained and competed diligently to receive his black belt after just 7 months of study.
In addition to close quarter combat training, he has extensive training
in both firearms and personal protection (security consultant).
He has trained with John Farnham of Defense Training International,
(DTI) in Colorado.
Mr. Farnam is considered the top handgun instructor in the
nation. He has personally trained thousands of federal,
state,
and local law enforcement personnel as well as civilians in the
tactical use of firearms.
Mr. Sandhu continues his firearms training under Dr. Joseph Bobovsky,
an Assistant Instructor of Mr. Farnam.
Mr.
Sandhu’s philosophy regarding martial art training is that it
is
an integrated, comprehensive part of a person’s
lifestyle.
Training strengthens the body, mind, and spirit. This is not to be
confused as a religious statement in either Eastern
or Western ideology.
The spirit is the core beliefs, internal strength and fortitude of a
human being.
Martial training forges and advances this spirit to cultivate a person
to be a good person in their family and community.
